Tips for Tenants from Auburn Rose

There are more people now than ever before renting apartments and residences. Being a savvy tenant is also more important now more than ever. Here are a few tips to being a smart tenant that will help your new move go more smoothly:

  • Read your lease agreement closely - Read the fine print on your lease agreement and figure out what kind of lease that you’re getting into. Read if it covers certain bills or utilities. Also, see if it has restrictions on smoking, pets and guests. Note the fees that occur when you prematurely terminate the lease.
  • Budget for your bills accordingly - If they’re not included in the rent, make sure you factor in the cost of utilities, such as power and water. Also be aware of cable and internet costs in the area you’re moving into. There are many costs beyond the rent that you or if you live with roommates everyone mus be able to cover every month.
  • Have all of your documents handy - When going into the leasing office and applying, make sure you have your written references and credit report handy with you. These documents will make you a great candidate for getting a new place.
  • Ask for repairs before moving in - Before you sign the lease and move-in, ask for any repairs that might be necessary for the unit. After you move in, take pictures of the conditions of the rental unit.
